Independence and Cancer Care
As Independence Day approaches, we reflect on a deeply held American value; freedom. Freedom represents the country’s founding and demonstrates the strength associated with the pursuit of our founding fathers. What may have begun with freedom from the Church of England and colonial rule, its pivotal force exudes into all areas of our lives as Americans. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness guaranteed by The Declaration of Independence allow for nothing- not a disease, nor a prognosis to take those qualities away.
As a cancer patient or survivor, striving for independence from cancer and the feelings of melancholy and grief that follow can be an intentional action towards a greater sense of freedom and liberty. The fears and anxieties that accompany cancer may be present no matter what treatment path follows.
