Independence and Cancer Care

As Independence Day approaches, we reflect on a deeply held American value; freedom. Freedom represents the country’s founding and demonstrates the strength associated with the pursuit of our founding fathers. What may have begun with freedom from the Church of England and colonial rule, its pivotal force exudes into all areas of our lives as Americans. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness guaranteed by The Declaration of Independence allow for nothing- not a disease, nor a prognosis to take those qualities away.

As a cancer patient or survivor, striving for independence from cancer and the feelings of melancholy and grief that follow can be an intentional action towards a greater sense of freedom and liberty. The fears and anxieties that accompany cancer may be present no matter what treatment path follows. Doctor appointments, scans, anniversaries of diagnosis, or aches and pains can all trigger the feeling of vulnerability. Grief is lonely. As you stand against your fears, acknowledging them but refusing to let them take control, consider the power of your own mind. Don’t dwell on what you cannot do but all of the new interests, hobbies, and people you will discover. Exploring yourself to the fullest capabilities from your goals, connections, memories, and above all, love. Loving yourself. Being yourself.

Living with cancer means living each day with the determination to hold the American founding fathers to the end of their bargain. So enjoy yourself on this 4th of July. Practice self-care through mindful indulgences. Arrive at your celebration with a grounded sense of purpose and self-value. Snack on fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, protect your skin with sunscreen, and most importantly, take it easy and rest when you need to. By doing so you can declare your independence from distress and enhance your quality of life.
