Can I Prevent Testicular Cancer?

This April, we highlight Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. This month helps us raise awareness about testicular cancer, especially highlighting early detection and its risk factors.

Many people try their best to prevent cancer, but for testicular cancer, there is no definitive way to prevent it. The best thing you can do is reduce your risk by performing regular self-exams, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and knowing your family history.

Regular Self-Exams

Every month, you should perform testicular self-exams. This allows you to check for any lumps, changes, or pain. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, it is important to talk to your doctor. Regular self-exams allow you to detect cancer early, when the chance for successful treatment is highest.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Keeping your whole body healthy is a great way to prevent cancer. You can do this by exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking. By doing all of these things, you are reducing your risk of developing testicular cancer.

Know Your Family History

When assessing your risk for developing testicular cancer, it is essential to know your family history. Having a family history of testicular cancer elevates your risk of developing it yourself.

Genetic conditions can also play a role in your risk of developing testicular cancer. Cryptorchidism and Klinefelter syndrome are genetic conditions that also increase your risk. You should ask your doctor about genetic testing to better understand your risk factors.

If you have any questions about your risk and how to reduce it, talk to your doctor.
